Yakitate!! Japan was an interesting anime and manga its very unique among other anime and manga, well I will not say that viewers and readers too expect to much out of it, its just that among the cooking theme anime and manga where did you see a series like this a bread making anime (the maker of this series must have really research about breads).

Well the anime revolves around in making breads, the battle between St. Pierre and Phantasia two large bakery, and the strive of the youth Azuma Kazuma of making a perfect bread that will be known as Japanese Bread, even though the anime have many parodies and comedy, it kind of lacks in the romance.
